Proud Projects (Trimester 1)

Hello everyone!

Today, I will be showing off 5 pieces of work that I’m very proud of. All of the projects are from Language Arts class.

DISCLAIMER: THESE ARE JUST MY OPINIONS AND NOT ALL ANSWERS ARE CORRECT FOR SOME QUESTIONS

The Real Boo Radley

The Real Boo Radley is a question I had to answer how Boo Radley developed from monster to hero. I’m proud of this because I spent a lot of time and research.

Boo Radley is a character in To Kill A Mockingbird, who is misunderstood by many. People think that he is psychotic because he doesn’t want to come out of his house, but frankly, he’s scared. His dad, Mr. Radley, keeps him isolated from outdoors to prevent him from going to jail. This damaged Boo emotionally, along with the rumors and evil of the people. But he proves himself to be a genuinely good person by doing deeds of kindness to the Finch children, Scout and Jem.

Boo Radley was considered a monster but proved to be a hero in the end. Throughout the story, there are many rumors that made Scout and Jem’s perspective think that he’s some sort of freak that eats raw squirrels and cats and that he has yellow rotten teeth. Boo Radley was also thought to be mentally unstable because he stabbed his father in the leg. ” According to Miss Stephanie, Boo sitting in the living room cutting some items from The Maycomb Tribune to paste in his scrapbook. His father entered the room. As Mr. Radley passed by, Boo drove the scissors into his parent’s leg, pulled them out, wiped them on his pants, and resumed his activities.” (pg. 11) But the true Boo is actually kind and innocent because he left gifts for the children in the hollowed tree outside his house; Such as chewing gum, a boy and girl carved out in soap (pg. 59), and the lucky penny. He also shows bravery and selflessness when he saves Jem’s and Scout’s lives from Bob Ewell’s threats. “Well, it’d be sort of shootin’ a mockingbird, wouldn’t it? (pg. 276) Scout stated that Boo Radley could have gone to jail for killing Ewell, but he did it to save Scout and Jem. Overall, Boo Radley is a savior despite what everyone else says.

Scout’s understanding of Boo started out to fear him because of the rumors and stories. “…Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that’s why his hands were bloodstained— if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood off. There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten…” (pg. 13) But her perspective slowly changes when little gifts were left in the hollowed tree and indicate that he wants to be their friend. She feels uncertain about if it’s a good idea, but the little acts of kindness soon convince her that he isn’t going to harm them. When the children decided to trespass onto the Radley’s property, Jem’s pants got caught in the barbed wire; He struggles to release the barbed wire from it, but gives up and leaves the pants there. When he goes back to the house, Jem finds his pants sewed back together, crookedly. “When I went back for my breeches— they were all in a tangle when I was gettin’ out of ’em, I couldn’t get ’em loose. When I went back—…” “… they were folded across the fence… like they were expectin’ me.” (pg. 58)  Scout understands that Boo means no harm and he just wants to start a friendship with them.

Boo teaches Scout to not judge a person before you get to know them. At the beginning of the book, Scout’s mindset believed that Boo was a bad person and every crime that happened in Maycomb was caused by him. When Miss Maudie’s house was burning down, Boo sneakily covered Scout in a blanket. “I looked down and found myself clutching a brown woolen blanket I was wearing around my shoulders, squaw-fashion.” (pg. 71) Scout figures out that Boo did all the kind gestures and acts to them and her mindset changes believing that Boo Radley is not a monster.

To Kill A Mockingbird used Boo Radley as a way to teach readers that people may seem bad, they could be really kind. Scout learned throughout the book that Boo Radley is just a normal person who just wants some friends. The book still relates to the real world since it deals with all the bad things such as racism and prejudice. It also deals with good things such as human dignity and innocence. Don’t judge a person before you get to know them, who knows, maybe they could be a lifelong friend.

Privacy with Technology

This assignment is another question I had to answer: To what extent has modern technology like phone apps, search engines, and social media changed people’s expectations of privacy? We got this assignment after reading New York Times Upfront Magazine “Does Facebook Know Too Much?” I’m proud of it because I’ve learned about how Facebook and other apps can get ahold of others information

People’s expectations of privacy changed because people put all of their trust and information into different phone apps, search engines, and social media. They don’t really know that some search engines and social media apps are collecting and analyzing their data. “It worries me that someone is getting a hold of my information and I don’t know what they are doing with my it,” 11th-grader at Colchester High School in Vermont (pg. 14 of The New York Times Upfront Magazine “Does Facebook Know Too Much?”) Facebook knows your location, private messages to your friends, and every photo that users have liked. Everything you do online is being practically monitored and analyzed; companies can sometimes tell what they are feeling.

Social media and websites have positive effects to collect data from different users. They do it to target different users based on their likes to advertise their products. It doesn’t waste the companies, app’s, and users’ time in seeing a totally unrelated ad. “The data that people give is extremely helpful in order for to get more-relevant offers, deals, opportunities that you potentially want,” says Ben LeDonni, CEO of the digital marketing agency Creative Multimedia Solutions. (pg. 17 of The New York Times Upfront Magazine “Does Facebook Know Too Much?”)

Social media and websites have negative effects when collecting data. It worries users on what Facebook, Instagram, or any other websites are collecting and which data they are collecting. “It worries me that someone is getting a hold of my information and I don’t know what they are doing with it,” says the 11th-grader at Colchester High School in Vermont. (pg. 14 of The New York Times Upfront Magazine “Does Facebook Know Too Much?”) It’s making people question how much information Facebook and other companies have on users since Facebook was said that to analyze your behavior.

Although Facebook and other companies, such as Instagram, retrieve information from users,  it has its benefits and drawbacks. It cautions us, but it doesn’t stop us from using it and liking it. It connects it to family and friends, lets us messages to-be friends, and other things that involve social media and websites.

Resume Cover Letter

This is my cover letter for my resume. The resume is for this Challenger Mission activity that we do. I’m proud of it because it was very hard to write about myself, but I managed to do it.

Dear Ms. Kojima,

I’m applying for the Challenger Mission’s REMote and Life Support positions. Based on the job description for these two positions, I am confident that I’m well qualified to do either of the jobs well. I am presently an eighth-grade student at Hongwanji Mission School and my experiences both in and outside of the classroom make me an outstanding candidate.

I am most interested in being hired for the REMote position. Based on its job description, I have extensive experience in completing these types of tasks. In my years of schooling, I have worked on many assignments that have required me to identify problems and think quickly on my feet to solve them in the most efficient way. I also have experience in doing different types of research. Throughout my years of studying science, I have enjoyed working on different experiments. I can use my skills in examining, observing, and recording a variety of results that are needed in the REMote position. I am knowledgeable in using the Internet to help me find the information needed. I have always worked well with my classmates and teachers, and I think it’s important for people to work together as a team to achieve success.

I would also like to be considered for the Life Support position. This job involves doing various kinds of testing. As a middle school student, I’m very familiar with different types of tests in all subjects. This would be very helpful when working on the Spacecraft in order to conduct and record research and results. I also have experience in handling stressful situations and being able to quickly problem solve in order to find the right solution. The Life Support position would also require me to work well with others on different projects. This is something that I particularly enjoy and I would consider this to be one of my strengths.

Please refer to my enclosed resume that includes my experiences and skills. I look forward to meeting you soon so that I can answer any questions that you may have. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely, Sarah

Welcome back to another post. This is the last resource class which is Art. Art is my favorite class! I just like drawing my thoughts out.

(sorry the lighting is really bad)

I drew this a couple years ago, but it was in the office (basically the school’s hall of fame) for everyone to see. So I was really proud and wanted to share it.

I hope you enjoyed the last resource class. My gingerbread house is amazing (lol :p). See you later! Bai!💜

Resource Class 2: Life Skills| Weekly Post #40

Hey guys!

Welcome back to another post. This class is Life Skills. This assignment is to debate your thoughts on people. Hope you enjoy this!

  1. Your relationships with your Mom and Dad- Great, couldn’t be better

Old Beliefs: My mom and dad are great parents. They support me in everything that I do and love me very much.

New Perspective: They sometimes are a bit too clingy when I tell them stuff. They always trying to get into my business. I’m very private about things, so I don’t share a lot of things with people in general, so when they try to ask me questions about stuff, it’s a little nerve-racking and uncomfortable.

  1. Adults in General- They are ok.

Old Beliefs: They are nice depending on how you treat them. They don’t care about what’s going on.

New Perspective: But if you tell them personal things, they could become your friend.

  1. Your relationship with your brother- Great

Old Beliefs: Sometimes annoying, and he can be a bit of a brat.

New Perspective: He cares about where I am. If I’m at a sleepover, he’ll take a lot of me.

  1. Your Friends- Awesome! Wouldn’t trade them for anything.

Old Beliefs: Super nice and fun to be around

New Perspective: Too much drama and gossip.

  1. Your academic career- Good

Old Beliefs: My academic career keeps going up and down. It goes up and down because sometimes I don’t do good on some assignments.

New Perspective: I’m going to do better and get a 4.0 GPA because I never got one before. If I get one, I’d be really happy and proud of myself.

  1. Your Future- It’s Going To Be Awesome!

Old Beliefs: I’ll be pursuing my dreams of becoming a fashion designer or being a video producer/editor, living in Los Angeles, in a quaint apartment.

New Perspective: My life could take a totally different turn. I could be an accountant, like my mom, but live my life to its fullest.

  1. Your teachers- Great

Old Beliefs: Sometimes too much homework overall, and can get a little irritated from asking the same question over and over. You can always laugh with them though.

New Perspective: They want me to achieve my very best and be as successful as I can. They are preparing me for the world.

  1. Your enemies- Not So Great

Old Beliefs: They aren’t good people (to me). If they do something bad to me, then I’ll avoid them.

New Perspective: Even though we don’t have the best relationship, they always stick up for me. Even if we aren’t friends, I’ll always be there for them.

I hope you like this post. See you later! Bai!💜

Core Class 4: Math| Weekly Post #40

Hey guys!

Welcome back to another post. This is the last core class, and the next 3 posts are going to be resource classes.

In math class, we use a notebook. In this notebook, I sometimes doodle (if I finish before everyone else). Don’t worry! I learn the subject, not just doodling in my notebook.

See? It looks like a lot of things and confusing, but I understand it. People say “Why do you use lots of colors?” and I say “Because I need to differentiate things and colors make things easier.” I guess the colors help me see words better than regular, bland, pencil.

I encourage you to use pen and highlighters to make your notes fun, but still readable. I really enjoy re-reading my notes, and it helps me remember things for tests.

I hope you enjoyed this post. This is the last core class post, and the next 3 are resource classes. See you later! Bai!💜

Core Class 3: Science| Weekly Post #40

Hey guys!

Welcome back to another Weekly Post. The next class is science. Now, I’m not a very big fan of science, but I am pretty proud of the work that I did.  This is about if people do tasks at different times of the day.

Question: Do people carry out tasks better at certain times of day?

Test 10 people different times of the day.

Problem

Does people’s reaction time vary at different times of the day?

Hypothesis

If I test 10 people’s reactions at different times of the day then the result will differ because the person will have different energy levels at different times of the day.

Safety Considerations

  1. Get permission before subjects volunteer.
  2. Work in an area where subjects can focus.

Conclusion

Do people carry out a task in different parts of the day? It depends on how the person is feeling that time. If they are feeling tired, the time will be really slow. If they are feeling excited or energetic, their time will be fast. My results show that my classmates had the better time in the morning.

I hope you enjoyed this post. The next core class is Math. See you later! Bai!💜

Core Class 2: Language Arts| Weekly Post #40

Hey guys!

Welcome back to the second Core Class. This is one of my favorite classes, Language Arts. I’m really proud of my answers to Scope’s “Escape from Slavery” Discussion Questions.

Closed-Reading Questions

  1. What made trying to escape from slavery so dangerous?

Escaping from slavery was dangerous because there were slave catchers. They capture the slaves and return them for money. “Most threatening of all were the slave catchers, ruthless, cunning men who collected cash rewards for capturing escaped slaves.” (pg. 6)

2. Consider the quotation at the end of page 7 in which Tubman refers to her decision to run away. Put this quotation in your own words.

Tubman had to think about why she had the courage to escape. She had the choice of liberty of death, and she could only choose one.

3. Why might the Underground Railroad have been given that name? Explain.

The Underground Railroad was given as a code name so people didn’t think of it as an escape route or hiding place. “The Underground Railroad was not a real railroad. The term was a code name for a network of people, routes, and hiding places that enabled slaves to escape to the North.” (pg. 8)

Critical Thinking Questions

  1. To dehumanize someone is to take away his or her human qualities—to make that person feel or appear less than human. In what ways was slavery dehumanizing?

Slavery was dehumanizing because it took away the rights of a person. It made them feel useless and not what they wanted their life to be. Some of the owners ordered them to do tasks that were almost impossible for them. “For months at a time, Tubman lived far from her parents, working for people who mistreated her.” (pg. 7)

2. On page 9, Tarshis notes that in addition to being courageous, successful, and clever, Tubman could be harsh. Do you think leaders sometimes need to be harsh? Explain.

I think that leaders should be harsh to get their word around, but not all the time. If you’re harsh all the time, people won’t stick with you, but it’s good to be harsh once in a while.

I’m really proud of these answers because I added quotes even when it said you don’t have to. I hope you enjoyed this post. See you later! Bai!💜

Core Class 1: Social Studies| Weekly Post #40

Hey guys!

Welcome back to another Weekly Post. This post is just one of the seven others, and all of them about classes. This one is Social Studies. This is one of my favorite pieces that I ever wrote for Social Studies. This assignment is to change the story or the book or movie that we watched. I did the movie which is the “Picture Bride”, and my scene question is: Would Kana save her baby, Kei? Would Riyo feel left alone and run away from Matsuji? Would she get Kana’s spiritual message that her home is now Hawaii because there is no one in Japan for her? My story is told in the point of view of the main character, riyo.

They started burning the cane field, but Kana couldn’t find her child, Kei. She tried to rush in to save him, but the field officers and other plantation workers forced her to stay out of the field. I could see the heartbreak and anger in her eyes. After the cane  finished burning, Kana dropped to her knees sobbing. The other plantation workers tried to find Kei or any trace of him, but nothing. I went to go comfort Kana, but she shouted at me “Go away!” I went back to the house and prepared to leave Hawaii. This place isn’t my home, Japan is, I planned to leave at dawn.

It was time to go. I left quietly, so Matsuji wouldn’t hear me, but as I ran away, I could hear him calling my name. I could feel the pain in my feet after running for such a long period of time, but I made it to the beach. I saw Kana sitting on a rock, staring at the ocean. I sat next to her and told her I was planning on going back to Japan. She looked at me and said “Riyo, there is no point in going back. Nothing waiting for you there.” I had to process what she said, but I didn’t want to believe that. Japan was much better than working in the plantation field. I told her, “I rather go back than stay here with Matsuji.” She nodded and said, “If that’s what you want, then go, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

I walked away from Kana, but glanced back to see her staring out the ocean. I believed she was thinking about Kei. I thought more about what Kana said, and had to live with that no one is waiting for me back in Japan. I ran back to the house, but I didn’t see Kana as I ran. Matsuji was sitting down counting money. He looked pretty angry that I left, so I said “I’m back.” No response. “Matsuji?” Still no response. Then, he started shouting at me, saying that I should just back to Japan and never come back. When I started just to think he was being a gentleman.

“Fine! I’ll go back since I’m clearly not wanted here.” I planned to sneak onto a boat that was departing to Japan. I told Kana goodbye, it didn’t seem like she cared because she was still depressed about Kei. I was leaving at dawn.

I crept onto the boat, and stayed behind all of the packages. The boat left the pier, and I fell asleep on top of some sandbags. I could hear the boat horn very loudly, I was back in Japan, my home.

I hoped you enjoy reading my story. See you in the next post. Bai!💜

The Prison That Everyone Feared| Weekly Post #38

Hey guys!\

Left Picture By Pixabay via Creative Commons       Right Picture By Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary via Creative Commons

Welcome to History with Sarah! Today, we are talking about Alcatraz. Lately, we have been learning about Alcatraz by reading articles and watching videos. I decided that I’d write it in first person view of the escapee, Frank Morris. I hope you enjoy my short story. 🙂

My heart was pounding. It was complete silence. I was waiting for this ever since I been brought to this filthy island. Tonight, I was planning to get my freedom.

It all started when Mr. Allen West, Clarence, and John Anglin decided to leave this death trap. We secretly plotted at night, in the still and silent darkness. Our plan was inventive, truly one of a kind.

We started stealing spoons, every chance we had. Also, we created a power drill out of a vacuum cleaner. The tools helped dig a hole in the vent. This was very painful and energy consuming, but we made a hole big enough to crawl through. Guards and wardens didn’t find out what we were up to. Guess we were too clever for them. They believed painting was my hobby, so I ordered brushes, paints, and things a mere painter would use, I made fake selections of the wall to cover up the holes in the cell.

Tomorrow, we’d escape, but how would the guards not come after us? Clever me, I made fake dummy heads out of random things I could find. I took hair from a barber shop to make it look realistic. In the dim light, it looked real as it could be.

I tucked the head into my bed. Everything was ready. Although, Mr. West couldn’t get out of his cell. We didn’t have time to waste, so we left him. The Anglin brothers and I carefully made it out. Avoiding watch, climbing down the pipes without making a peep. I had a lot of emotions, but fear wasn’t one of them. I believed that we could make it.

A 12-foot fence between me and the world. No one had made it passed the freezing currents. We climbed the fence as quick as possible, blew the raft up, and paddled away. The salty air blew post my face, knowing that this would be the last time I’d be seen, but freedom was right there. We made it safely to shore and went our separate ways. Nowhere to be seen again.

Now, everyone believes I’m still alive or drowned. People claimed to have seen me and the other escapees, but is it true? Did I, Frank Morris, make it? Well, no one knows for sure.

I hope you enjoyed reading my short story as I did writing it. Thanks! See you next week Bai!💜
